IGI Confirms Ongoing Commitment to Lab-Created Diamond Certification
Jul 21, 2025
The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has announced it will continue to certify lab-created diamonds using the same universal "4Cs" grading system (cut, color, clarity, carat) applied to natural diamonds.
IGI emphasized its role as an independent, unbiased third-party certification body, stating it has remained free from outside influence since its founding. The announcement comes as some organizations shift to less rigorous grading standards for lab-created stones.
Recent financial data reveals that 54% of IGI’s revenue comes from certifying lab-created diamonds, compared to just 16% from natural diamonds.
This commitment follows several recent developments in the industry: the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) changed its terminology for lab-created diamonds earlier this year, and HRD Antwerp in Belgium announced it will stop issuing certificates for loose lab-created stones.
Meanwhile, France is reviewing a law related to advertising lab-created diamonds, and controversy continues over the marketing tactics of some natural diamond companies.
Who is IGI?
The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is one of the world’s leading and most trusted diamond certification labs, based in Antwerp, Belgium. Known for its independence and strict adherence to global standards, IGI certifies both natural and lab-grown diamonds using the same rigorous methods.
For consumers and brands alike, an IGI certificate represents authenticity, quality, and transparency — especially in today’s rapidly evolving diamond market.
